De paddle grip, herbekeken door Stellar Grip. This has gotta be either the coolest and/or most bizarre SUP accessory I’ve ever seen.

These are new SUP paddle handles from Steller Grips. They’re very unique and designed to give you more speed & power when you’re racing.

A whole bunch of them just arrived on our doorstep and we can’t wait to test ‘em out. We’ll let you know in a few days if they’re crazy-good, or just crazy-looking… Until then, enjoy some SUP eye candy.

Bij een reis naar LA (USA) voor het werk heb ik mij op Redondo Beach in een SUP shop een QuickBlade Kanaha Abstract aangekocht.

Het SUP gebeuren was toen nog nieuw voor mij en na een initiatie met een instructor van dezelfde shop was ik direct verkocht!

Dus de QB Kanaha Abstract (blauw/wit), carbon shaft, epoxy/carbon blade en een ergonomic palm grip.

De ganse paddle weegt amper 0,59kg en ligt heel goed in de hand. Mijn versie is de 100sq.in aangezien mijn grootte en gewicht.

Bij het SUP'en zelf merk je amper dat je hem in je hand hebt en hij ploegt heel goed door het water komt het door de ligt gebogen punt van de blade? of door de dihedral van de blade? allemaal dingen waar quickblade onderzoek naar gedaan heeft en iets wat ze claimen uit jarenlange ervaring komt uit het paddles maken voor outriggers ,kano en olympisch roeien.

Het is duidelijk dat er heel wat studie in de paddles is gegaan alvorens ze op de markt te gooien en inderdaad op het SUP worldcircuit zijn er heel wat SUP-riders die als sponsor QB hebben en daar ook heel mooie resultaten mee neerzetten.

Voor mij was comfort het belangerijkste aangezien ik niet direct (toch niet dit jaar) de battle of the paddle ga varen. En na een training van 2 uur op vlak water met de Naish javelin 14' had ik geen klachten, zelfs niet na een ganse voormiddag SUP surfen op foxspot met golven tot 1,5m.

Besluit : De Quickblade Kanaha Abstract is echt een hele goeie allrounder en ligt licht in de hand.

Voor mij zeker een 8/10 waard!

I’ll start by stating that there is no such a controversial and at the same time difficult gear selection in Stand Up Paddle than the paddle length. Period.

At the end the right paddle length is that that works for you, it’s a personal issue, but let’s have a look at how can you get to that right measure, from different points of view.

Everything starts when I began to realise that my paddle was limiting my progress: it’s too stiff, the blade too big, and the shaft too long, or so it seems to me. I realised that because when having to apply maximum power at critical moments like a late take off, or when I’m too tired, the excesive paddle length forced too much my injured right shoulder. So I began to analyse what was the right paddle length before buying a new one, arriving to “The Definitive Guide for choosing your SUP paddle lenght”.

I can still see myself thrusting the tip of my fiberglass paddle into the murky water as I initiated a very unsophisticated and unanticipated brace. I instantly heard the grating crunch as the tip of the blade ground into whatever hid beneath the surface. Whether it was a rock or a submerged piece of hardened junk, it didn't matter. Double bladed paddles are the norm in kayaking, but more traditional methods of paddling like the OC1's and outriggers, the single bladed paddles are used exclusively. So which side of the fence should stand up paddling be on?

When a new video emerged earlier in the week of a double bladed paddle, made exclusively for the needs of stand up paddlers, many questioned the reasoning behind the paddle. The company marketing the product say 'it uses double the exercise in half the time', but is there a real performance advantage to using two blades joined by some kind of funky rotating handle thingy?
